CONCRETE beam that rests on grade (ie: on the soil) but is supported by PIERS or columns rather than the soil directly underneath. A GRADE BEAM may appear to be a FOOTING or short FOUNDATION wall unless one inspects carefully enough to discover the connections to the top of the PIERS or columns underneath.
